Indiana, Pennsylvania, the Christmas Tree Capital of the World, is located just one hour east of Pittsburgh at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains. Each year visitors and residents alike drive out to their favorite Christmas tree farm to select and cut down a fresh Christmas tree to display through the holiday season. Meet up with family and friends, in Pittsburgh’s Countryside and enjoy some holiday cheer as you pick your tree. Start a new tradition and visit Indiana County and take home a tree!

How ironic is it that the Christmas Tree Capital of the World is also the birthplace of Jimmy Stewart, Hollywood’s Christmas Classic Film Star of “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Because Indiana County, Pennsylvania is the Christmas Tree Capital of the World, holiday events are ongoing throughout November and December. Several open houses and festivals occur prior to Thanksgiving. The official kick-off is the “It’s A Wonderful Life Festival and Parade in November. Blue Spruce Park lights up the season beginning in November and continues through Jan. 1st, 2013. Trolley Rides, horse drawn wagon rides, holiday plays and entertainment, Amish Wedding Feast and free movie showings happen throughout the entire holiday season.  Indiana County Christmas Tree Growers Association

 Indiana County countryside is well-adapted for the growing of various species of evergreen trees popular during the Christmas season. The Indiana County Christmas Tree Growers Association is a group of local Christmas Tree Growers dedicated to the promotion of Christmas Tree farming in Indiana County. Their efforts in the growing and shipping of high quality Christmas Trees at competitive prices has put Indiana County on the map. Members of the association grow and nurture the trees throughout the year and during the holiday season open up their fields and pre-cut tree lots for visitors to choose their Christmas Tree.

What better place to find your perfect Christmas Tree than the place known as “The Christmas Tree Capital of the World”!

 It all began back in 1918 when the process of harvesting Christmas Trees as a farm crop began right here in Indiana County, PA!  By 1956, approximately 700,000 trees were cut during the holiday season.  While other states may harvest more Christmas trees now, Indiana County was the first!

 Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms, LLC

Come create a family tradition with Fleming’s Christmas Tree Farms! You’ll have tons of fun selecting your perfect Christmas Tree whether you opt for a pre-cut tree from their lot or choose one from the field. You can cut it down yourself or they’ll cut it down for you. Available Christmas Trees are Fraser Fir, Douglas Fir, Canaan Fir, White Fir, Scotch Pine, White Pine and Colorado Spruce. Gregg VanHorn’s Christmas Tree Farm

Johnston Nursery provides both Retail and Wholesale Christmas Trees and wholesale seedlings. During the holiday season, they offer choose and cut trees at the farm on 9272 Chambersville Road, Creekside, PA or choose from their tree lot at The Meadows parking lot on Oakland Avenue in Indiana, PA. Visit downtown Indiana and stop by the Jimmy Stewart Museum, honoring Indiana County’s hometown hero James M. Stewart.  Downtown Indiana was the birthplace of this American icon.  The Museum is devoted to the famous actor’s film, radio, television and military career as well as highlights from this civic leader’s life.  See artifacts from Stewart’s life, including objects from his Oscar-nominated role of George Baily in the Christmas classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life”!  The Museum also features a 1930′s vintage movie theatre which plays the Christmas classic throughout the holiday season.  Make the Jimmy Stewart Museum a “must stop” during your visit to Indiana County this holiday season.  Contact Information: 835 Philadelphia St., Indiana, PA 15701. Festivities

21st Annual Festival of Lights at Blue Spruce Park

Looking for something fun to do this holiday season with your entire family?  Travel to Blue Spruce Park in Indiana, PA for the Festival of Lights.  See more than 80 light displays, including still and animated, as you drive through the park around a two-mile lake. Stop by the Lakeside Center to visit with Santa and shop for unique, locally made crafts in the festival gift shop.

The Drying Shed’s Annual Christmas Open House

Dates: Friday – November 2nd, Saturday – November 3rd, and Sunday – November 4th

Location: The Drying Shed in Smicksburg, PA

Time: Friday 10am – 8pm; Saturday 10am – 6pm; Sunday 11am – 5pm

Information: Saturday:  Door prizes every hour (2 ft decorated pencil tree). Friday & Sunday:  Door Prize (gift basket). In store specials all weekend!  Holiday Refreshments! “It’s A Wonderful Life” Festival & Parade

Date: Friday – November 16th

Information: Come out and enjoy the parade, and the festival. Light up night, in front of the  Courthouse, will take place immediately following the parade. Activities on North 7th Street, will include roasting marshmallows, crafts, music and hayrides. It’s A Wonderful Life movie will be shown  at the Indiana Theatre with free admission.
