Indiana University of PennsylvaniaSince its founding in 1875 as Indiana Normal School -- a teacher training institution - Indiana University of Pennsylvania has experienced dynamic growth, to become Pennsylvania's fifth largest university and one of the region's best. Its quiet beginning, serving just 225 students in a single building, is contrasted with its growth to Indiana State Teacher's College in 1959, and to university status in 1965. Now enrolling an average of more than 14,000 students annually, IUP is a powerful force among regional universities, with a reputation to match. It has been recognized as a "best buy" by nearly every major college and university guidebook. Among those citing the educational quality and cost conscious pricing of IUP have been Changing Times, The New York Times' Best Buys in College Education; How to get an Ivy League Education at a State University by Dr. Martin Nemko; and Barron's Best Buys in College Education. Money Magazine's Money Guide has ranked IUP twenty-second among all the nation's public universities and FIRST in Pennsylvania. IUP gives its students a choice of more than a hundred major fields of study in forty-five academic departments, located within six colleges and two schools. The university also offers outstanding graduate programs at the master's and doctoral levels. IUP is the only state-owned university in Pennsylvania that offers doctoral degrees. For more information, call the Admissions Office at 724-357-2230. Breezedale, the former home of merchant, banker, and industrialist James Sutton, was built in 1867 and still stands in the center of campus and serves as the alumni center. IUP is also home to the archives of America's Industrial Heritage Project, which are kept in the Stapleton Library. The Archive Center is open Mon - Fri., 9:00 - 4:30. Call 1-724-357-3039.
