Tourism Spotlight

Excerpt from their newsletter:

“National Travel & Tourism Week celebrations kicked off May 7-13, 2017 for the Indiana County Tourist Bureau. The weeklong events focused on bringing awareness to the remarkable impact tourism provides for local jobs and economic growth potential. “Just look at the numbers. Travel supports one in nine American jobs, including nearly 1,500 jobs here in our county,” noted Denise Liggett, Executive Director of the tourist bureau. “The celebration emphasizes what travel means to our community, and we called on everyone – - from elected officials to local residents – - to join us in recognizing this important industry.” ICTB chose the theme, “Faces of Travel,” to spotlight the people behind the scenes who are the first point of contact when visitors arrive. Tourism employs a diverse workforce here, from the Jimmy Stewart Airport fuel manager to the front desk hotel clerks, and food service workers in restaurants. Tourism spending in Indiana County last recorded over $175 million from our lodging establishments, restaurants, souvenir shops, gas stations, museums, recreation and entertainment venues, while trickle-down figures support further sales to other local industries. The Tourist Bureau invited the community to celebrate Tourism through the following events:

 Daily Facebook posts entitled “Faces of Travel” began April 19th. Each post included smiling faces of your friends, business owners, and volunteers who help to build a positive tourism experience for our visitors.

 Over 300 miniature Christmas trees each representing a tourist bureau member were on display on the front lawn of the Indiana County Courthouse May 7-13th.

 A special WalkWorks program in Blairsville, which included a history tour led by Ed Patterson at the Blairsville Riverfront Trail commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Indiana County Parks & Trails on May 10th.

 Founders Gallery & Gifts in Blairsville hosted a special Mingle on May 10th. Delicious refreshments were provided by ICTB Blairsville members: Market Street Pastries, Ungrapeful Winery, The Koffee Shoppe, Cornell Creamery, the The Villa and Fredo’s Grill.

 The Wooden Quilt project was launched last week. Take a drive around Indiana County and enjoy a display of wooden quilts showcasing the beautiful outdoors of our partner communities. From Saltsburg to Smicksburg, Marion Center to Blairsville, and everywhere in between – see the eleven quilts hand-painted by local students and artists. Contact the Tourist Bureau Office at 724- 463-7505 for complete details and locations.”
