Knotweed Makes the Big Time!
Part of ICTB’s mission to bring media attention to our region includes sending our Group Sales Associate
Maria Jack to the annual Mid-Atlantic Tourism Public Relations Alliance (MATPRA) Media Marketplace
held this year in Maryland. Jack connected with a writer reporting on a unique story, “cooking with invasivores”.
This chance meeting provided the perfect opportunity to share the fascinating aspects of the
prolific Knotweed plant found in Indiana County. The journalist was amazed to hear of the many uses of
the weed showcased at the annual Knotweed Festival including jellies, muffins and lip balm. The weed
peaked the writer’s interest and had him eagerly seeking further information. The Tourist Bureau connected
the writer with BCDC member Carol Persichetti, who provided the story details he needed. The
invasivore story was featured in the January issue of Eastern Home & Travel. The magazine covers eastern
United States, from Maine to Florida, and provides a blend of our country’s earliest history and
contemporary, cosmopolitan living. It is an exciting accomplishment for the Tourist Bureau to share that
Blairsville of Indiana County PA, is now among the many locations highlighted in this high-end travel
magazine for all to read and be intrigued.
Harley Brings It Back!
Try this summer softball cocktail: Take 10,000 visitors, 260+ teams, 32 softball fields, stir in some local restaurants,
convenience stores, hotels, and attractions and what do you get? The three ICSST/USSSA Fast Pitch
Tournaments being held again in Indiana County this June! The 12th annual tournament held over three separate
weekends provides an opportunity to showcase our entire county, our university and provide an economic
impact to the area businesses that is immeasurable. The showcase tournament also acts as a college recruitment
event, which attracts college bound players and coaches from numerous states and Canada. The Tourist
Bureau has been working hard with Indiana’s lead organizer, Tom Harley, and our local hotels to ensure all visitors
are welcomed and provided with local information to make their visit one that will bring attending staff and
families back for a return visit.
